At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :
1	Master disciplinary knowledge: Master a foundation of knowledge in the fields of history, philosophy, arts and literature. Articulate this knowledge in a historical, social and cultural context.
2	Make sense of a text, event or work: Interpret an event, work, image or text in its historical, social and cultural context. Evaluate the significance of cultural productions in a given society and account for their circulation. Open up to other cultures, means of communication and expression, and perspectives.
3	Learning outcomes specific to the teaching unit: Master a core of literary knowledge fundamental to the student's disciplinary training in FIAL. Content

This course aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the historical development of European literature, covering authors, works and trends from different languages and countries. This articulated course extends from the origins of Western culture (the Bible and Greek and Latin literature) to the 21st century, via the medieval and humanist tradition, early modernity and the Baroque age, the Age of Enlightenment, the 19th and 20th centuries in Europe. The leitmotif of the course is the use of various works and texts to illustrate in concrete terms the general literary knowledge covered, and its link with the aesthetics and history of the moment. The course also proposes a reflection on what literature is as a disciplinary and artistic object, showing that literature is not self-evident, but that its definitions and understandings are a historically determined construction.

Teaching methods

A lecture course based on the compulsory readings, accompanied by a few optional monitoring sessions. A syllabus with excerpts from the compulsory texts will be available at the UCR at the beginning of the term.

Evaluation methods

The assessment for this course comprises 2 tests which take place on the same day:

1. Three open questions, each relating to one of the major periods studied, i.e. one open question per teacher.
2. A multiple-choice test covering all the content of the lectures and compulsory readings.
