Main themes
This course is intended for "absolute beginners".
The course will aim at integrating the main notions of Greek morphology and syntax, in order to acquire the knowledge and skills essential for reading a simple text.
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 decline or conjugate any Greek word;

2 understand and translate simple classical Greek texts into French;

3 translate simple French sentences into Greek (theme).

Content
The course for absolute beginners is made up of lessons each comprising a "theory" section and an "exercises" section.
After a brief introduction to writing and phonology, the lecture sessions gradually introduce declensions and conjugations using tables and translated sentences to illustrate the theory and syntactic facts.
Exercise sessions, organised in parallel, enable students to make active and individual progress in the lecture subjects under the guidance of a member of the teaching team.
Teaching methods
Alternating interactive class sessions and practical work.
Evaluation methods
For students on the CLAS and HORI programmes :
  • Continuous assessment (10%)
  • Tests during practical sessions (30%)
  • Written exam (60%)

As the Greek I course is essential for the rest of the curriculum for CLAS and HORI students, the requirements will be higher than for students in other programmes, resulting in a separate examination. The different expectations will be explained during the course.
For students on other programmes:
  • Tests during practical sessions (30%)
  • Written exam (70%)
If the pass mark is not reached in January, written exam in June and/or September. At these sessions, only the mark from the written exam will be taken into account.
