Prerequisites
To take this course, students must have reached level B2.2 of the Council of Europe's Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, as attested by :
  • the B2 placement test organized by ILV at the beginning of the term
  • OR a recent DELF B2 certificate (maximum 1 year and successful completion of all 4 skills)
  • OR successful completion of course LFRAN1401 with minimum 16/20
Main themes
Humour and the cinema are the two axes around which learning the French language and its varieties takes place. Within these topics, the student goes back and forth between the francophone culture and other cultures. Links are regularly made to literature, songs and the press. All this creates the environment for studying vocabulary in all its nuances and complexities and for learning stylistic devices and plays on words.

Grammar
The course covers complex sentences, all verb tenses, adverbs of intensity and comparison, prefixes and suffixes, stylistic devices, registers of language, expression of causation, consequence, hypothesis, concession and opposition.
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

  • understand the main content of concrete and abstract subjects in a complex text;
  • express themselves clearly on a large number of subjects;
  • express a critical opinion.

Content
In this course, the student is an active participant, speaking regularly and expressing opinions on the topics covered. The aim is to develop the student's ability to understand and produce complex texts in specialist areas and to understand that which is the most difficult for speakers of other languages: humour.
Various tools, in particular techniques from the world of theatre, are available to help the student progress with confidence in learning the subtleties and nuances of the language.
Teaching methods
In this course, the student listens, reads, learns vocabulary, revises grammar, makes presentations and participates in debates. He or she writes various texts throughout the course:
  • a film review,
  • a reading file of a French book chosen from a list of titles suggested by the teacher,
  • a summary of documents
  • a text(e.mail, report') linked to a "cinéclub" or uclculture event.
The student will also present orally a subject linked to cinema; act out in a comedy sketch and make a group presentation on a grammar point.
Some projects are carried out in pluridisciplinary and multicultural teams
Evaluation methods
The certification is made up of a continuous assessment and an examination during the term.

Continuous assessment during the term: 30%
  • Written text: 15%
  • Oral presentations: 15%
Continuous assessment tasks may not be submitted (for the first time) after the deadline set by the teacher, except in the case of a medical certificate.
No continuous assessment tasks may be submitted during the August session.

Final exam: 70% grade

The final exam mark is made up of 5 parts:
  • a test during week 10 on language proficiency (10%)
  • a final exam (60%) during week 13 or during the January, June or August session, covering the 4 skills:
    • reading (15%)
    • listening (15%)
    • writing (15%)
    • speaking (15%)
In the event of failure (mark below 50%) in at least 1 of the 5 parts of the examination, the mark for the weakest part will be applied to the whole examination:
  • If the student fails the language section (mark below 50%): the student has the opportunity to retake the test only once, before the final exam day, after receiving formative feedback following the first sitting.
  • If a student fails one or more competencies in the final exam (mark below 50%): students who sit the final exam again in August have the option of sitting the failed part(s) OR the entire exam if they wish to improve their mark.
An absence (justified or not) from the examination or one of its parts will result in a final mark of absence (justified or not).
