This course is meant to lead to a lively and active discovery of the opera world, and thus to the music world, not only in its own realization but also in the devices helping its creation (composition, interpretation, rehearsals, direction, scenery, ...).

Content
This course develops around a project in partnership with the Theatre Royal de la Monnaie. After an introduction on the major steps of Opera history and its cultural stakes, students are invited to go and see three productions of the semester, each of these preceded by a detailed introduction. External people are regularly invited within the framework of the course. A visit of the Ateliers de la Monnaie and meetings with Theatre professionals (machinists, decorators, dressmakers, architects,') are also included.
Teaching methods
The teaching methods are divided between lectures, visits to theaters (La Monnaie or Opéra de Liège workshops, for example), lectures and attendance at the shows offered (compulsory presence).
Evaluation methods
The course takes place during the whole year (1q + 2q).
There are two ways of assessing student learning:
a written examination in the June term on the material covered in the course
the writing of critical reports on certain operas seen during the year.
The final mark includes the assessment of the reports on certain operas presented during the year (30% of the mark) and the mark for the written examination (70%). The submission of reports is compulsory. These will be followed up personally with the students.

Other information
Presence at opera performances and conferences is mandatory. Most of the costs related to opera tickets are paid by the UCL but a symbolic participation of the student is required
