Prerequisites
None. This course is obligatory for students in musicology.
Main themes
The theme can relate to a period from the dark ages up to contemporary times. It can also look into places (a city, a region, a nation), authors (compositors, librettists) or forms (fugue, sonate, blues). In every case, music texts are the starting point of the course, but they are put into their cultural, social, religious,' context.

Content
Taking the perspective of a "connected history", the course deals with the circulation of musical knowledges and practices during the modern and early-modern period. Specific attention is given to the questions raised by missionary and diplomatic activities.
Teaching methods
The course consists of lectures by the professor and of training sessions for the working groups. In order to prepare each session, the students read and analyze various documents dealing with issues related to the course.
Evaluation methods
Oral presentation (in public) of a collective work carried out during the semester.
