Prerequisites
The productive command of basic grammar and vocabulary as well as the command of the language skills of the  A2+ (minimum) or B1- level as described in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Main themes
This teaching unit treats subjects about themes that are related to the study programme and the future professional needs of the student. E.g. Videos about child psychology, psychology in the work environment, etc.
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 Reading Comprehension
  • At the end of this teaching unit, the student should be able to read factual articles concerned with contemporary and field-related subjects and to understand them with a satisfactory level of autonomy.

2 Individual listening Comprehension :
  • At the end of this teaching unit, the student should be ableto follow and to understand the main points of a presentation provided it is clearly structured and the topic is reasonably familiar and field-related,
  • to understand the main points of most factual radio- and TV programs provided the topic is reasonably familiar and clearly articulated standard language is being used.
 Interactive  listening comprehension:
  • the student should be able to understand  most of what is said in an everyday conversation provided standard language is being used, the topic is familiar and without having the interlocutor adapt his language.

3 Individual speaking skills:
  • At the end of this teaching unit, the student should be able to give(after preparation) a simple and clearly developed presentation on a field-related subject and to manage the following debate.
  • At the end of this teaching unit, the student should be able to to explain a viewpoint on a topical issue well enough in order to be understood without difficulty.
Interactive speaking skills:
  • At the end of this teaching unit, the student should be able to take an active part in discussion in familiar contexts, accounting for and sustaining your views.

4 Writing skills:
  • At the end of this teaching unit, the student should be able to write formal letter in order to pass on factual information and to synthesise information and arguments from a number of sources

Content
This course is primarily intended for third BAC students in Psychology. Students from the master of this faculty can also take the course as an in-depth study.
Students can either take an English course or this course.
The course amounts to 30 credits.

Linguistic réquirements at the start of the course: B- of the European Framework of Reference for Languages
This teaching unit  focuses mainly on Dutch oral production and listening comprehension.. There are a few texts to be read at home.
It deals with themes related to the area of study. Video and audio fragments as well as some texts are used to illustrate the themes. Each theme will be followed by discussions  giving the student the possibility to use the newly acquired vocabulary and structures.
Teaching methods
  • This course involves 1 hour per week during Q1 and Q2
  • Lessons in groups of max. 20 to 25 students.
  • Note attesting to "attendance hours".
        If circumstances (in terms of health or the possibilities offered to us by the university authorities) permit, "face-to-face hours" consist of live teaching in a room assigned by the ILV. If "live teaching" is not possible, we will switch to digital lessons through Teams where the presence of students is required.
  • Workload  -
    Classroom hours : 30 h
    Self-study (including e-learning): 30 h  
  • Extension of psychology vocabulary .  In all cases the vocabulary is presented in context by means of topical listening documents. Additional exercises will have to be done at home (e-learning on the Moodle platform)
  • Training and development of listening skills through authentique documents focussing mainly on psychological themes, by means of classroom teaching. Additional exercises will have to be done at home (e-learning on the Moodle platform)
  • Training and development of speaking skills in professional contexts by means of classroom teaching .  Additional exercises will have to be done at home (e-learning on the Moodle platform).
  • Training and development of reading skills, done at home and tested in class.
Evaluation methods
Linguistic réquirements at the start of the course: B- of the European Framework of Reference for Languages
The teaching language is Dutch. The answers given by the students are required to be in the Dutch language.
  1. Vocabulary test and listening comprehension test in the kast week of  Q1 (10 %)
  2. Vocabulary test (20%) and test on listening comprehension (25%) and reading comprehension (15%° in the penultimate week of the course (May) 
  3. Oral test (last week of the course in May) (25%)
  4. Active and motivated presence and participation in class: 5%
If the health (or other) situation does not allow for face-to-face examination, then an alternative exam will be presented in the form of a Prezi presentation with video on a psychological topic.
Attendance at the course is compulsory. If the teacher considers it useful, he/she may propose to the jury to oppose the registration for the course examination of a student who has not regularly followed the learning activities (RGEE - art. 72).
