Content
The introduction to practical theology is divided into four parts. It begins with a questioning of the status of faith experience (1). The first part will explore the challenges of pastoral/practical theology today and its method (2), as well as its history (3) and reference texts (4). We will then study the current situation to better understand how to proclaim the Gospel today: Church and society, “liquid modernity”, post-Christianity, culture and faith, pluralism, individualism, crisis of transmission' (5).
Teaching methods
Teaching will take the form of lectures presented with the aid of projections and written materials distributed in class, and available on moodle. All documentation and sources are available on moodle.
One part of the course will be a group work on the development of a theological typology based on empirical data.
Evaluation methods
The goal is to demonstrate the ability to carry out research on a practice related to the Christian faith. In other words, the aim is to “get out of the classroom” and carry out empirical research, according to the methods specified in class. The important thing is to carry out the research, not the content as such, within the reduced framework of this exam.
Students will be assessed on the basis of three exercises:
- a faith testimony analysis exercise, during the course, graded 1/20
- a field observation, with report and analysis, graded 11/20
- an oral presentation of this study, highlighting the knowledge acquired in the course, integrating the study of normative dimensions (resources drawn from Part B of the course: Introduction to Canon Law), marked 8/20

Other information
Students who are required to take this course by e-learning (authorization required from your program coordinator) must purchase the textbook Entering Practical Theology (2019). Specific instructions will be given at the beginning of the term.
