Content
The internship consists of 60 hours of non-participatory observations and the writing of a critical case study discussed in relation to the theory covered in the CMH option courses. The observation internship is not a traditional internship aimed at learning best practices but rather a critical observation internship aimed at developing an eye that will ultimately help improve practices.
The student should particularly avoid the "going native" syndrome, which involves becoming immersed in the institutional narrative of the service. Stay an observer!
Evaluation methods
A observation and critical analysis report will be sent to one of the academic supervisors. This 5-page report (excluding references and appendices) aims to explain how the institution and its practices support rehabilitation and social reintegration. The student should distance themselves from the practices and discourses of the institutions by linking the observations with the courses. In this report, the student will also explain how they connect with one or more key courses in the community mental health option, mainly: WPSCY2211, WFSP2211, WFSP2282, or WFSP2230. It will include the following sections: institutional context, activities performed, evaluation of the service and practices from a rehabilitation/reintegration perspective, conclusions, references.
This report can form part of the student's thesis if the internship and thesis topic converge. The report may include a case study of a service that is approached from the thesis perspective: for example, peer support, caregiver involvement, employment support, continuity of care, etc.
The report is upload on Moodle two weeks before the beginning of the corresponding session.
Potential academic supervisors: Vincent Dubois, Jean-Charles Peeters, Pablo Nicaise, François Wyngaerden, Vincent Lorant.
Other information
The internship location must meet two criteria:
(1) Have activities that contribute to the social integration or social rehabilitation of psychiatric users;
(2) Be willing to integrate the student, notably by identifying an internship mentor.
Examples of locations and/or activities: mobile teams, community mental health care centers, hospitals or day care centers, patient coordination or consultation centres, preparation for the hospital discharge of psychiatric patients, therapeutic clubs, activities of mental health care networks, mental health care services, social services, employment services, case management services (case-management, care coordinators), protected housing initiatives, functional rehabilitation centers for mental health disorders and other psychiatric disorders (e.g., INAMI conventions).
The intern is responsible for negotiating their internship with the chosen location. However, they can seek assistance from an academic to facilitate this organization. It is highly recommended for student interns to combine the internship activity with their thesis topic. If applicable, they should consult their thesis supervisor and/or the prospective academic internship supervisor to integrate these activities.
Documents:
  • An internship agreement must be signed before the start by the internship mentor (at the internship location), the student, and the academic supervisor. A standard agreement is available at the FSP secretariat.
  • The internship agreement must be accompanied by a brief protocol (maximum 1 page) describing the planned observation activity.
