At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

Understanding of the civilisation of English-speaking countries. Understanding of British national identity and reflection on the contemporary situation in the UK and its former colonies and the roots of the contemporary situation in the history of the countries.

The UK : The Country and the People / The UK: politics and Government / The UK in the World: International Relations / The UK: Education / Reflections on Identity, Colonisation and post-Colonial Realities (Being Black in Britain, The National Trust and Slavery, The Stolen Generation in Australia, Residential Schools in Canada) / Reflections: The UK and its ‘Special Relationship’ with the US / The UK: Social Services / The UK: The Media / The UK: Culture and the Arts
Teaching methods
The course is taught in lectures, combined with class discussions.
Students are expected to study the material offered in the course book and powerpoints as well as in the articles and videos discussed in class. It is expected that they will be able to discuss the texts for additional reading and the videos in the context of the course book and powerpoints. Students also have to be able to meaningfully discuss the key elements of the history and presentday situation of the topics dealt with in class.
Evaluation methods
A 20-minute oral exam, with time to prepare the questions. Students are not allowed to use any lecture notes or books while sitting the exam.
