At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to : | |
| Introduce students to the use of sources (published or unpublished), their analysis as well as to synthesis work. Apply theoretical lessons to a concrete case. This seminar therefore completes and enriches the heuristics of Modern Times second year course. The seminar is also an opportunity to put into practice the course of paleography. | |
Content
Each student is requested to address a specific aspect of a shared theme relating to the history of the Modern Times, selected more specifically (but not exclusively) in the history of the ancient Southern Netherlands of the sixteenth to eighteenth century. The theme and the sources on which the research is based vary from year to year, and are related to the different fields of the Modern Times.
Teaching methods
Communal and directed definition of the subject; bibliographical research and state of the question; practical (and supervised) initiation to palaeography and diplomacy; introduction to the critical edition of manuscript sources; analysis of documents; communal sessions during which we will discuss the method, specific problems and results.
Evaluation methods
Final written assignment (scientific article format) including, in addition to an analysis, a bibliography and, possibly, in the form of appendices, a critical edition of sources. Particular attention must be paid to the critical apparatus and spelling. The assessment also takes into account the oral presentation (mid-term) of the research results.
