Main themes
This course explores the territorial and landscape foundations of human settlements, the evolution of city-countryside relations, and the emergence of urban issues. It examines the history of urbanization processes and territorial projects (urban, rural, and landscape) within their geographical, environmental, political, economic, and social contexts. Additionally, it delves into the theories and schools of thought in urbanism and landscape, with a particular focus on those of the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries.

Content
The course focuses on describing the forms of cities, territories, and landscapes, as well as their rationalities in light of the historical, cultural, and technological contexts in which they were built.
The course aims to teach students to recognize the forms of cities, territories, and landscapes, as well as their representations, viewed in their historical depth. These forms provide us with information about the current situation, which is why understanding them is fundamental to the practice of design, at the heart of the architect's profession.
The course also focuses on presenting the means of production of cities, territories, and landscapes and analyzing their complex intertwining with history, power relations, and the issues at stake for the various actors involved (particularly public and private). Finally, the course also offers tools for developing critical perspectives on contemporary cities and the issues related to their future development.
Each series of classes will consist of a theoretical introduction, a presentation of historical references, and a perspective on the contemporary era. A series of themes will serve as common threads running through the various situations analyzed, which will also be organized according to a general chronology: in particular, the relationship between cities and the countryside; the city as designed versus the city as produced; and the analysis of modes of representation.

Series of lectures, designed as an alternating dialogue between the two teachers.

Continuous assessment (15%) and written exam, during exam period (85%)
