Main themes

In-depth and interactive analysis of a selection of representative works of medieval and modern Latin literature, based on a theme renewed from year to year.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :
1	read in the original language and translate into literary French representative texts of medieval and modern Latin literature;
2	produce an argumentative commentary on one or more works of Latin literature, including literary, historical and stylistic considerations;
3	conduct personal research as an extension of the course.

Content

In 2025-2026, the course topic will be: Students and professors at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Louvain in the 16th century. This theme will allow us to explore various types of texts (inaugural lectures, lecture notes, public debates, friendship books, occasional poems and poems praising the city, faculty records, etc.) in various formats (manuscripts, old prints, modern editions). We will pay particular attention to the stylistic varieties of Latin used and the debates surrounding them (scholasticism versus humanism, dialectic versus rhetoric). 

Teaching methods

Latin texts will be read, translated and commented on during the course. Students may be asked to prepare some translations at home before the lecture.

Evaluation methods

Oral exam with preparation time (review of the material covered in the course and analysis of a new document).
