Main themes
The topics addressed during the classes aim at arousing the interests of young adults: we shall speak about hobbies, leisure, holidays, studies and possible future professions, daily life and contemporary events, trips and relations with others, and the culture (that is, the habits and customs) of the countries that speak the target language.
The focus is on communication and accuracy (e.g. pronunciation and grammar).
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

By the end of the course, the student should have reached an upper-intermediate level (B1+) in
  1. listening,
  2. reading,
  3. speaking (both individual and interactive)
  4. and writing.
 
Content
The pedagogical method is based on authentic texts and videos. Various conversation activities (role-plays, discussions, simulations,....) are used to exploit and develop each theme while also allowing students to use new vocabulary and structures.
Students are also encouraged to study and broaden their vocabulary range through the self-study of a  vocabulary book in addition to the study of vocabulary from the course notes.
Grammatical structures are revised through self-study.
Teaching methods
Activities in class (groups of about 20 students)
Vocabulary exercises, reading/listening comprehension exercises, writing and speaking exercises  around the thematic areas to be addressed during the course.
Individual work, in particular:
  • Preparing the activities;
  • studying the vocabulary and the self-study material;
  • revising the course notes and studying the material.
Evaluation methods
January exam
  1. continuous assessment (tests in class and assignments, participation: 30% of the final mark)
  2. written exam (reading comprehension, listening exam, vocabulary, writing: 50% of the final mark)
  3. speaking exam (20% of the final mark)
If you don’t take one of the exams (the written or the oral exam), you will not be given any mark and will be considered as Absent.
June/September exams
Your continuous assessment mark will not be taken into account in June/September.
June/September exams final mark:
  • the written exam (70%)
    AND
  • the oral exam (30%)
If you failed the January exam but got 10/20 or more for the ORAL exam you can decide to keep that mark for the June/September exam of the same academic year. If you think you can improve that mark, you may also decide to re-do the oral exam. The most recent mark will then be taken into account.
If you don’t take one of the exams (the written or the oral exam), you will not be given any mark and will be considered as Absent.
Other information
Preparation, course attendance and active participation are compulsory.
Students are strongly advised not to put off asking for additional help if they feel they need it. An appointment can be made with their teacher to look into additional help for the course.
