Main themes
The first part of the course will outline the panorama of historical conditions in which the social and cultural life of Spain developed: the medieval mosaic; the presence of three cultures (Christian, Arab and Jewish); unification at the end of the 15th century. The second part concerns the emergence of modern Spain. The accent will be on the mechanisms of the globalisation of Spanish power (main stages in the conquest of the Americas and mechanisms of control), as well as on the politico-religious dimension of the Hispanic monarchy, as it expressed itself, notably, in Flanders.
As far as possible the course will be based on visual, historical and literary documentation.
 
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 Students will be able to contextualise, historically and culturally, the literary and visual documents of the Hispanic world, in a period ranging from the 6th to the 18th centuries.
 
Content
This course will offer an overview of the history and cultural (artistic) production of medieval and modern Spain (up to the 18th century).
Teaching methods
The course will favour a reverse teaching dynamic, i.e. participants will have readings to do before each class session, which will focus on these prior readings.
Evaluation methods


A written examination will make up 100% of the final mark.  This will include multiple-choice questions, open-ended questions and questions on the identification and contextualisation of documents and other historical evidence (coins, etc.).
The examination arrangements for the September session will be the same.
Assessment will be entirely in Spanish.

Most of the course's online resources will be housed and made accessible on the Moodle platform.
