Main themes

The theme of the seminar depends on its articulation with other courses and concerns aspects of (spoken or written) French phonectis/phonology, morphology, lexicon, syntax, discourse/pragmatics.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :
1	The seminar is centred on a yearly defined theme, related to the functioning of the French language (spoken or written). It gives the students the opportunity to make up a state of the art about the selected theme and to lead a personal research based on the analysis of authentic data, gathered by the students or during former research.

Content

The seminar's aim is to present a particular approach of discourse analysis, in a pragmatic perspective focusing on the study of speakers' interactional aims and discurse strategies, with a particular interest for political discourse. This approach will be less centered on formal aspects than on the qualitative analysis of the relations between discourses and their context.
Moreover, the seminar's lectures will address epistemological and methodological questions that are relevant for humanities and social sciences in general and for linguistics in particular (e.a. what do objectivity, neutrality validity mean ? what are the specificities and (dis)advantages of qualitative and quantitative approaches in linguistic research ?).

Teaching methods

The seminar sessions will be made of, firstly, teacher's lectures and, secondly, of students' presentations about, on the one hand, their own analysis of a corpus given by the teacher, and on the other and, the personnal research they will have to carry out in the course of the seminar.

Evaluation methods

The assessment is based on students' personal research, which will be presented in a written paper. Students of the MA in Linguistics are also asked to present their research during an oral exam where they may be asked to answer questions about the seminar's lectures.
Students will be allowed to submit their final paper only if they have submitted a proposal for the text(s) to be analyzed and a first draft of their research question and bibliography on a given date set by the teacher.
Any paper that does not meet the requirements communicated via Moodle regarding deadlines for paper submission, the paper content and structure, and the respect of academic norms may be regarded as non-conform and may lead students to fail the exam.
