Main themes
The main theme of the course is to show the links between gender issues and other types of inequality, an approach which draws on elements from a range of disciplines in the Social Sciences. The perspective taken is at once comparative and historical.

Content
The course consists of (1) illustrating gender inequalities at the social and family level, (2) explaining these inequalities on the basis of the main feminist currents and scientific theories, and (3) illustrating pathways for reducing these inequalities.
By way of introduction, I will present the biological and cultural explanations of gender differences and introduce the main feminist currents. I will then focus on the division of labor between men and women within the household and on the labor market. Various indicators will illustrate trends and national specificities. I will then show how life events, such as the formation of a couple or the birth of a child, can exacerbate differences between men and women. Preferences concerning the sex of the child are the very first form of discrimination in the life course, and can be observed in both the South and the North of the planet. We will also look at policies and ways of reducing inequalities between men and women. Throughout the course, several theories will be mobilized to explain the persistence of gender differences.
The course will be supplemented by contributions from experts. Previous topics have included violence against women, the link between sexual orientation and vulnerability, and gender in energy renovation.

Teaching methods
The course will take the form of lectures. Each theoretical discussion will be accompanied by quantitative data, often in a comparative perspective between countries, or qualitative data. I will encourage you to ask your questions and make your comments in the classroom or via the Teams chat. Participation will also be encouraged through activities such as the Moodle quiz or retrival practices.

The evaluation will be by multiple choice questionnaire
