In 2015, the American playwright Eve Ensler received a UCL honorary doctorate. Every February, in support of this committed feminist’s campaign to end violence against women, the university participates in ‘One Billion Rising’.
This movement (whose name refers to the one billion women who, according to the UN, will be raped or assaulted in their lifetime) organises on Place de l’Université, in Louvain-la-Neuve, an en masse dance (or ‘flash mob’) involving university students and staff. The dance is filmed and shared as an expression of solidarity at www.onebillionrising.org.
