Title: Moving beyond essentialism in corpus linguistics

Abstract: Intercultural communication has employed a variety of linguistic approaches, but corpus-linguistic methods are relatively less common. If we distinguish between essentialist and anti-essentialist research, much corpus-informed intercultural analysis has invoked the former position. Such studies employ a differentialist standpoint, compare data from two or more large cultures, and explain any findings in terms of such cultural differences. In this talk I will outline how anti-essentialist corpus-informed intercultural analysis can be conducted (Handford, forthcoming).
