Course on “Nonlinear Response Analysis”

Prof. João Almeida and Dr. António Correia (LNEC, Lisbon) co-lecture again this year, from mid-May to mid-June, the 5-week intensive course "Nonlinear Response Analysis", which is part of the international Master of Science programme in "Civil Engineering for Mitigation of Risk from Natural Hazards". This Master is managed by the Understanding and Managing Extremes Graduate School (UME), set up by the IUSS Pavia and the University of Pavia.

Due to the COVID pandemic, the 4-ECTS 55-hour-lecture course is taught online to both MSc students as well as PhD students.

The course presents and applies state-of-the-art simulation methods for the nonlinear response of structures to earthquake loads. It focuses strongly on the understanding of static and dynamic analysis procedures of equivalent frame models, including other advanced topics such as soil-structure interaction. The derivations and assumptions of the underlying structural theories and numerical solution methods are thoroughly presented and illustrated with a set of Jupyter Notebook documents and Python scripts. Other applications make use of a series of products from SeismoSoft Earthquake Engineering Software Solutions.
