SEISMIC RESILIENCE AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT – A 'CONCRETE' CHALLENGE BY JOãO PACHECO DE ALMEIDA
This iMMC seminar will start by quickly presenting some figures on losses due to earthquakes, both human and economic, and how they can be measured and estimated through seismic risk assessment. The components of seismic risk will then be discussed, using Liège as a case study. The increase of resilience in those countries with high seismicity and large vulnerabilities (in Belgium as well!), will then appear as an unavoidable condition to achieve the UN sustainable development goals. Seismic resilience interplays with sustainability in different ways, which will be highlighted. The talk will end with a discussion on some of the ‘concrete’ challenges ahead in terms of structural performance: I will share my view on how we can look at them – a view that differs from current international regulations – and the desired role of science and technology to help overcome them.
