The doctoral day in Public Health 2018

IRSS Bruxelles Woluwe

Brief report on the Doctoral day of Public Health Researchers 13 November 2018

On November 13, in the beautiful Château de Colonster, we had the pleasure of participating in the Doctoral Day of Public Health Researchers.

Professor Guillaume, from the University of Liège, opened the conference. Overall 34 doctoral students from UCL, ULiege and ULB exchanged and presented high-level research with the 25 best abstracts being published.

Professor Alexandre Ghuysen, an emergency physician, shared his experience of conflict management simulation in the morning plenary session. He stated “good judgment requires good listening.” Often in conflict, we listen to ourselves, interrupt to talk about us, or “listen” as we prepare our own reply. The simulation postulate (which can be used in any circumstance) is to consider the interlocutor as an intelligent person who aims to give the best of themselves and wants to improve.

Our colleagues Antoine Christiaens, Marie Friedel, Maria Moithino de Almeida, Diamantina Moreno-Gutierrez and Afi Agboli successfully presented their current research.

Antoine, due to the complex mechanisms of diabetes in elderly patients, had a challenge to explain his research to non-medical audience members in a way that was easy to understand. He succeeded in the end!

Marie explained the difficulties of measuring the effects of palliative care in children and involving these little patients in research.

Maria took us on a journey to Nepal to assess the impact of the 2015 earthquake on admissions to the Kathmandu hospital.

In the afternoon module “health systems,” Pierre presented the impacts of psychiatric hospitalizations on the social integration of patients with severe mental illness.

Lastly, Professor Jean-Marie Degryse reminded us that the doctoral school is an extraordinary meeting place, where we need to produce new ideas and work in an international context. Our school of public health is a window to the world, where nearly half of all the PhD students are international. Finally, he reminded us that we are working for a better world.

Professor Degryse, as president of the doctoral school, welcomes you next year to Louvain-la-Neuve for a new scientific adventure!
