The research group of B. Hackens focuses on understanding electron transport in nanodevices and nanomaterials at the local scale, mainly using scanning probe techniques. Nanodevices are mainly fabricated from high mobility 2D carrier systems hosted in semiconductor heterostructures, or in 2D crystals, including graphene. Different themes are…

The UCLouvain quality of education system articulates processes at institutional, sectoral, faculty and course levels, which complement and reinforce each other. Each of these processes can be broken down into quality loops. The diagram below presents the articulation between institutional processes (IP) in education. The IP3 to IP6 processes…

Phonons are collective atomic vibrations in crystals that govern many physical phenomena ranging from electrical and thermal transport to superconductivity and light absorption. When calculating phonon properties, it is important to consider that the interactions between two particles in a crystal are not bare but screened by other particles. The…

Cancer cells remain clumped together via a sort of ‘Velcro’ which allows them to adhere to each other wherever they appear. In order for cancer cells to leave a tumour and spread throughout the body during metastatic processes, cancer cells must reduce their adhesion and increase their ability to migrate. They can do this by changing the amount…

This image depicts the vorticity magnitude in the wake of a large wind turbine operating in realistic turbulent wind conditions. Each blade produces a vortex tube that is shed from its tip, giving rise to a near wake characterized by a helicoidal configuration. Further downstream, the vortex tubes start to break down under the influence of the…
