CHAIRE HOOVER Louvain-La-Neuve

Eric Boot (3 years) (October 2019–Augustus 2020)
Eric R. Boot obtained his PhD in philosophy of law at the Radboud University Nijmegen. Prior to coming to the Hoover Chair, he was a postdoctoral researcher at Leiden University’s Institute of Philosophy and a lecturer in practical philosophy at Utrecht University. His research interests include the philosophy of human rights, applied ethics, Kant’s practical philosophy, and democratic theory. At the Hoover Chair he will work on a three-year research project funded by the FNRS. This research will focus on the public interest. Appeals to the public interest in politics, law, and healthcare ethics are both incredibly frequent and lamentably vague. Accordingly, this project aims to provide much-needed conceptual clarification of the public interest. How can we determine wherein the public interest consists and how is it different from private interests?
