DEMO recruits a post-doctoral researcher

Post-doctoral position on Internal Migration Dynamics in the “Global South”

The Centre for Demographic Research (DEMO) at the Université Catholique de Louvain is looking to hire a post-doctorate on the ARC Project “New Approaches to Understanding and Modelling Global Migration Trends” (GLOBMIG). The DEMO center, established in 1963, conducts research on demographic issues around seven broad themes: 1) historical and contemporary demography in Belgium, 2) fertility, family transitions and gender relations, 3) international migration and integration, 4) population and health dynamics, 5) the challenges of aging, 6) population environment and energy, and 7) data and methods development. The center is also known for its organization of the yearly Quetelet Seminar and the international peer-review Quetelet Journal.

The GLOBMIG project aims to develop tools to better understand and model global migration patterns, to anticipate future migration pressures and investigate the implications of policy reforms. As part of the GLOBMIG project this position will focus on the interplay between internal and international migration in Asia and Latin America. Internal migration refers to the flows between rural, semi-urban and urban sectors in particular. The objectives of this position would include mapping internal migration trends, examining the future projected migration trends, and unravelling the relationship between internal migration and urbanization across Asia in particular. Within this context candidates can propose further study according to their interests, such as on the determinants of internal migration flows.

We are looking for candidates with:

  • A PhD degree in quantitative social sciences – finished or to be completed soon
  • Publications in international peer-reviewed academic journals
  • Excellent skills in quantitative research using large databases from different sources
  • Proven ability to collaborate with other team members
  • A keen interest in Asian population dynamics
  • Demonstrated knowledge of migration
  • Fluency in English
  • Residency of no more than 12 months in Belgium during the last three years (strict condition)

Employment conditions:

  • Contract for 30 months full time, with net monthly allowance starting at 2490 €.

We ask you submit:

  • A motivation letter
  • A research proposal related to the GLOBMIG project of max. 2 pages
