Projet FNRS-CDR (2020-2023): ACROSS - Approximative Constructions across languages: forms, functions and linguistic change (Crédit de recherche obtenu par Kristel Van Goethem)
Ce projet vise à établir un inventaire multilingue des "constructions approximatives". Le projet se concentre sur les trois questions de recherche suivantes :
(1) Formes : Quelles stratégies lexicales sont utilisées en différentes langues européennes pour exprimer l’approximation ?
(2) Fonctions : Quelles sont les fonctions sémantico-pragmatiques exprimées par des constructions approximatives ?
(3) Changement linguistique : Comment émergent et évoluent les constructions approximatives dans le temps ?
Le projet contribuera à la recherche existante de la façon suivante :
- il étudiera l'expression de l'approximation dans des langues peu étudiées, en mettant l'accent sur le néerlandais, comparé avec un large éventail d'autres langues européennes ;
- il adoptera pleinement une approche constructionnelle et étudiera comment les constructions approximatives peuvent être intégrées dans des réseaux constructionnels multilingues ;
- il étudiera l'émergence de nouveaux approximateurs et l’évolution (formelle et fonctionnelle) de constructions approximatives existantes, ainsi que les facteurs déclenchant ce changement constructionnel ;
- il se concentrera sur les caractéristiques morphologiques « anormales » qui caractérisent typiquement la morphologie expressive par rapport à la formation ordinaire des mots et, ainsi, approfondira nos connaissances sur le rôle de la " créativité linguistique " dans la variation et le changement linguistique.
The project aims at establishing a cross-linguistic inventory of ‘approximative constructions’. It will focus on the following three research questions:
(1) Forms: Which lexical strategies are used cross-linguistically to express approximation?
(2) Functions: Which are the semantic-pragmatic functions expressed by approximative constructions?
(3) Linguistic change: How do approximative constructions emerge and change over time?
The project will contribute to the existing body of research in the following ways:
- it will study the expression of approximation in understudied languages, with a focus on Dutch, compared to a wide set of other European languages;
- it will fully adopt a constructional analysis and explore how approximative constructions can be integrated into multilingual constructional networks;
- it will investigate the emergence of new approximators and the (formal and functional) change of existing approximative constructions, as well as the factors triggering this constructional change;
- it will focus on "anomalous" morphological features that typically characterize expressive morphology when compared to ordinary word-formation and, as such, deepen our insights on the role of ‘linguistic creativity’ in language variation and change.
