The Twenty Five Most Important Studies in Health Promotion

23 août 2022
American Journal of Health Promotion, Ahead of Print.
Which are the studies, special reports and commentaries that have been most influential in shaping the health promotion profession? This editorial poses that question to many of America’s most accomplished researchers. Each was asked to name one or two ‘must read’ studies from other scholars as well as to feature one of their own research projects that has had the greatest reach. This review of seminal studies focuses on community health, patient education and behavior change research and a future editorial will focus on workplace based health promotion research. Readers are challenged to review the four decades of research represented by this list and consider whether trends can be identified with respect to the relative attention researchers are giving to individual, interpersonal, community and societal factors influencing health behavior. How clear is the evidence that the choices we make are determined by the choices we have?

Impact of the use of Red Lotus Critical Health Promotion Model as a pedagogical framework on health promotion graduates' professional practice: a mixed methods study

ABSTRACT

ISSUE ADDRESSED: The Red Lotus Critical Health Promotion Model (RLCHPM) is designed to support critical health promotion practice. This study investigated the impact of the use of the RLCHPM as a pedagogical framework for competency-based university curricula on the practice of graduates from health promotion programs from an Australian regional university.

METHODS: A mixed methods study was undertaken, including an online survey of all 195 graduates from 2008 to 2016, followed by semi-structured interviews with a subset of respondents.

RESULTS: There were 95 survey respondents and 10 interviewees. More than half reported the model impacted health promotion programs they are involved in, however less than a quarter felt it impacted workplace policies. Impact was significantly higher for those with higher levels of knowledge about, confidence in using, and perception of utility of the RLCHPM, and stronger alignment of their practice with critical health promotion values and principles. Graduates' embodiment of the model's values and principles in practice enhanced the impact of the model. Factors that limited the impact included participants' implicit use of components of the model without explicit reference to the model, and the incongruence between participants' professional practice ideals and those of their workplace context.

CONCLUSIONS: The use of the RLCHPM as a pedagogical framework for university health promotion programs positively impacted on graduates' practice within the Australian context. SO WHAT?: The RLCHPM could be used as a pedagogical framework in universities to develop competency-based critical health promotion curricula to enable graduates to progress critical health promotion practice.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: The participation of the stakeholders concerned by health promotion interventions targeting health determinants is a founding principle of integral importance. Notwithstanding the potential benefits of these approaches, their implementation is still quite limited and field practices are highly varied, if not totally heterogeneous. Such limitations can be considered in conjunction with the poorly defined outlines of participation, which can lead to variable interpretations of what it entails, and also to the different contextual factors potentially affecting its implementation. This study therefore aims: (1) to identify the various perceptions and experiences of participation, and (2) to identify the factors impacting the implementation of participation in support and development of health promotion.

METHODOLOGY: All in all, 34 professionals participated in this qualitative research, in which triangulation was associated with analysis of the written productions collected during creativity workshops (Cube activity) and semi-structured interviews and observations. All participants gave their informed consent to participate, and the data were anonymized and remained accessible to one and all. The data were subjected to content analysis (Bardin, 2003) focusing on types of factors contributing to the implementation (or non-implementation) the of participation.

RESULTS: Data analysis led to the emergence of 7 categories of factors: stakeholder characteristics, the individual characteristics of professionals and decision-makers, relations between professionals among themselves and with stakeholders, the methods and form of the approach implemented, the local organization and its missions, and the national context.

DISCUSSION: The representations and experiences of participatory approaches among health promoters are very heterogeneous. Implementation depends largely on how stakeholder characteristics are taken into account, on the ability of professionals to adapt to them, on the development of favorable interpersonal relationships through reflexive work on posture, and on the use of relevant and scientifically validated methods.

CONCLUSIONS: To strengthen the openness and motivation of field professionals to undertake participatory actions, awareness-raising and training in specific skills seems relevant, the objective being to enable them to anticipate risks and to make the most of whatever opportunities appear.
