“Entrepreneurship by people with disabilities: avenues for future research”

Abstract:

In this research seminar we will outline the nature of the research that has been published on the topic of disability and entrepreneurship, including the recent interest of the field in issues surrounding health. After outlining the themes that have been attended to so far, we will introduce the audience to the field of ‘critical entrepreneurship studies’ and explain how the lenses developed here might help further the current debates on disability and entrepreneurship. We will then present some of our own recent findings, based on empirical data gathered among entrepreneurs with physical disabilities and a conceptual study* in which the need for more intersectional approaches is advocated. We will end the seminar by pointing out terrains that remain undiscovered and hold potential for entrepreneurship scholars to engage with, and set out our own future research agenda.

Biography:

Jannine Williams is Lecturer in Human Resource Management at QUT, Australia. Jannine has a background in working with D/deaf and disabled people and research projects on disabled academics’ career experiences and gender, media and leadership. From this Jannine has developed research interests in the development and organization of socially responsible work which is explored through a concern for the meaning and experiences of work and the development of inclusive work practices. She has co-edited two books: ‘Deaf Students in Higher Education: Current Research and Practice’, and ‘Gender, Media and Organization. Challenging Mis(s)Representations of Women Leaders and Managers’. She has published in Work, Employment and Society, British Journal of Management, Gender, Work and Organization, Studies in Higher Education, International Journal of Management Reviews, Disability & Society, International Journal of Entrepreneurial Behaviour and Research, among others.
