Juray De Wilde received his BSc, MSc (1995) and PhD (2001) from the Ghent University (Gent, Belgium), working with Prof. Froment and Prof. Marin on the transient kinetic testing of SO2-NOx adsorption and the development of an in-house CFD solver and code for 3D simulations of gas-solids flows in riser reactors. Following post-docs in 2003-2004 at Princeton University (Prof. Sundaresan) and Ghent University (Prof. Dick), he joined the Université catholique de Louvain (UCLouvain) as associate professor in 2005. He received his tenure in 2008 and was nominated professor in 2012. He received a Dow Corning award in 2012. In 2015-2016, prof. De Wilde was invited as visiting professor at the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) of the US Department of Energy and the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education. With Prof. Froment, he is co-author of the 3th edition of the text book Chemical Reactor Analysis and Design (Wiley, 2010).
Prof. De Wilde's research focuses on the multiscale modeling of single and multiphase chemical reactors. This involves experimental and numerical research addressing the various aspects that determine the performance of chemical reactors - intrinsic reaction kinetics and transport phenomena / fluid dynamics. The multiscale modeling approach is applied for the development and scale-up of novel reactor technologies for specific processes: structured catalytic reactors for Steam Methane Reforming (SMR); high-G fluidized beds using vortex chambers for fine particle production, drying, coating and granulation; atmospheric plasma deposition reactors for the coating of surfaces; transient fixed bed reactor technology with heat integration for efficient CO2 storage and reconversion; and bayonet type reactors for efficient heat recovery in SMR and in ammonia cracking for hydrogen storage/recovery.
Prof. De Wilde is the co-holder of 3 patents and published his work in 70 papers in international peer reviewed journals and worked extensively with the industry for the kinetic testing and modeling of reactions and the detailed modeling and simulation of chemical reactors and processes. In 2022-2023, in collaboration with ZoneFlow Reactor Technologies and Honeywell-UOP, a unique SMR pilot plant was designed, constructed and successfully operated at UCLouvain to test innovative catalysts under conditions close to commercial and to validate the detailed SMR simulation models that were developed.
