The prerequisite(s) for this Teaching Unit (Unité d’enseignement – UE) for the programmes/courses that offer this Teaching Unit are specified at the end of this sheet.
Main themes
In-depth study of classical Greek grammar, mainly syntax, with a linguistic approach (origin and evolution of the structures of the language).
Both Level III courses (A and B) will cover a selection of chapters related to the syntax of the simple and complex sentence.
In addition, the student will learn additional vocabulary and translate short texts (versions) and long texts (cursive).
Content
Systematic study of classical Greek grammar (with emphasis on syntax).
This course covers the following topics
1. The essential structures of Greek syntax (completive, circumstantial and relative clauses; tense and mode values; case syntax;
2. The particular structures of classical Greek;
3. Personal translation of two or three Greek texts (cursive reading);
4. Complete mastery of Greek accentuation.
Exercise hours are mainly devoted to the practice of translation from Greek into French and from French into Greek. Special sessions are provided for the revision of morphology and vocabulary.
Teaching methods
Lecture, with practical exercises (translation from Greek into French and from French into Greek).
Evaluation methods
The final exam, consisting of a written and an oral (cursive) examination, tests theoretical knowledge and practical skills (including translation from Greek into French and from French into Greek).

LGLOR1270 (Greek II) is a prerequisite for this course.
