Prerequisites
This course is given to absolute beginners: students of all faculties who have registered the course in their program of studies, members of the personnel of the UCL, free students (from the UCL or not) who have never studied the Portuguese language or have not reached an A2 level.
Main themes
The object of this course is to develop the communicative competence in general Portuguese (European or Brazilian) and to make students sensitive to the culture of the Portuguese-speaking countries, specially Portugal and Brazil.
The communicative contexts and the subjects are related to the everyday life: leisure, travel, home, invitations, family and friends, studies, future projects, etc.
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

  • Ask and provide information about oneself and others, daily needs, everyday life, one's living environment and the weather, using basic expressions.
  • Understand phrases and the highest frequency vocabulary related to areas of most immediate personal relevance (personal and family information, shopping, employment, etc.).
  • Understand the main points in short, clear, simple messages and announcements.
  • Understand short texts written in common everyday language relating to everyday life (short letters, advertisements, notices, etc.).
  • Understand short, simple narrative or descriptive texts.
  • Communicate simple and current tasks requiring only short and direct exchange.
  • Write short and current documents (e-mails, short messages, fill in a form, etc.).
 
Content
The learning module consists in developing the basic communicative and linguistic skills needed to survive in everyday situations in a Portuguese-speaking country. The methodology used is varied and linked to the topics addressed.
Teaching methods
This learning module is taught in the form of contact hours using the communicative, lexical and grammatical approach.
Evaluation methods
Various marks make up the final assessment:
  • 1 written test: 50%
  • A written (25%) and oral exam (25%) at the end of the first semester
September session:
  • Written exam: 65%
  • Oral exam: 35%

Besides a course book, complementary learning material will be available in Moodle UCLouvain. The teacher will also advise links to different complementary websites (extra exercises, dictionary, verbs conjugation etc.).
