Learning outcomes
At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to : | |
| On completing this unit, students should be able to: • understand and explain the English language studied during the course; • translate the vocabulary learned using appropriate equivalents in French; • talk about the aspects studied in the Q2 lectures on “culture” using the relevant vocabulary. This unit is also an opportunity for students to develop their oral proficiency. The unit's target level is the European Reference framework B2 level for languages (minimum level required to pass the Unit). Students learn to give a presentation and deepen their understanding of - and ability to use - the cultural features of the English language (usage, polite forms, register, etc.). |

Content
Written part: study of the English vocabulary by themes or key words and of aspects of Institutions and Society in the English-speaking world.
Oral part: each lecturer will link the oral and lecture parts of the course and adapt the manner and content of doing so part based on the size of the groups and the level of the students.
The course focuses on current news and culture items in the English-speaking world using the vocabulary and concepts studied in Q1 and Q2. After having revised various techniques of public speaking students will have the opportunity to do a presentation in front of their groups.

A range of various exercises on the English language and its use.
This course is subdivided into two Quarters, each divided itself into two parts.
Q1 is made of 15 hours of lexicology and 15 hours of oral practice.
Q2 is made of 15 hours of lectures on the history of institutions and contemporary social issues and 15 hours of oral practice (role-playing, guided conversations, oral presentation, group work, etc.)

Evaluations
Q1
Lexicology (50% of Q1) a written exam covering the chapters studied in the textbook and the material studied in the sessions.
Oral practice: (50% of Q1) : final exam in January 2024 (25% of Q1) and continuous evaluation through a portfolio of listening and speaking evaluations. Practical information about these will be posted on Moodle. Should a student not be present for any of these evaluations without a medical leave, the evaluation will receive a grade of 0.
Q2
Lectures (50% of Q2): a reading portfolio (25%) and an oral exam (25%)
Oral practice (50% of Q2 ): written exam on the vocabulary lessons studied during Q2 (10 % of Q2), presentation (20 % of Q2) and continuous evaluation through a portfolio of listening and speaking evaluations (20% of Q2). Practical information about these will be posted on Moodle. Should a student not be present for any of these evaluations without a medical leave, the evaluation will receive a grade of 0.
The June final grade of this unit is an addition of the Q1 and Q2 grades (30% for Q1 and 70% for Q2).
August session
Lexicology and oral practice: Written exams for Q1 and Q2 covering the chapter in the textbook and the material studied in the sessions. (25%). Oral practice: oral exam on the material covered during the semester (25%). Students who did not do a presentation during the year will have to prepare one for the August exam.
Q2 Lectures: same as the June exam: reading portfolio (25%) and oral exam (25%).
In case of a final grade being less than 10/20, the part for which a 10/20 or higher mark was attained (if any) will automatically be transferred to the second or third exam session. It is thus not possible to re-sit the exam related to this part of the course. In case of an overall failing grade in September, both parts of the course — the written and oral parts – have to be taken again the following year.
