At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to : | |
| By this work, the student demonstrates that he/she is capable of carrying out a personal scientific work on a particular problem. In order to do so, he/she will be able to define a working hypothesis (if necessary by analysing examples), to carry out bibliographical research in accordance with a scientific approach, and to reach a meta-reflection. He/she will develop a written presentation of his/her research, presenting an adequate argumentation based on the questioning and the results of his/her research. This written presentation will also meet the criteria for the presentation of a scientific text. The work will consist of between 7000 and 8000 words of body text (excluding bibliography, appendix(es), table(s), etc.). The student writes the paper in one of his/her languages of specialisation and using English, Dutch or academic German. By doing so, he/she will prove that he/she has a good written command and sufficient writing skills of this foreign language. |

Content
The student chooses a theme that he/she will develop and explore in a personal and original way for a scientific research project at the end of the bachelor's degree. This theme relates to questions and issues in the literature, civilization or linguistics of the languages of specialisation. At the end of the 3rd year of the bachelor's degree, he/she will submit a written paper on the chosen subject, which he/she will also defend orally.
Teaching methods
Regular working meetings with the promoter (=reader 1), especially in the second quarter.
Evaluation methods
The promoter and reader assess the written work and the oral defence. They will each award a final mark, the average of which will be the final mark.
Students are required to systematically indicate all parts where one or more AIs (or any other online tool) have been used, e.g. through the use of footnotes. Students should specify whether the AI was used to search for information, to write the text or to correct it. Students should also mention which AI was used (ChatGPT, Bing, Bard, Chatsonic...) and the dates on which it was used. These sources of information will be systematically cited in compliance with the bibliographic referencing standards indicated by the course instructor. Students remain responsible for the content of their work, regardless of the sources used
To ensure that the student's written production is personal, criteria such as originality, critical thinking, creativity and illustration with examples (e.g. from his/her own experience) will be taken into account.
Any behaviour on the part of the student which prevents or attempts to prevent, in whole or in part, a correct assessment of his/her knowledge, aptitudes and/or skills will be considered as an irregularity.
The oral defence of the work is compulsory and scheduled during the session. It requires students to give an oral presentation of their work, followed by questions from the jury. The oral defence gives the student the opportunity to improve the mark of the written work. The oral defence is attended by the promoter and the reader. It lasts between 20 and 30 minutes, including a maximum of 10 to 15 minutes of oral presentation by the student. The following criteria will be taken into account in the assessment: structure and presentation, relevance of questioning, originality, sound argumentation, bibliographical references, spelling, correct command of the language and style. Any form of plagiarism will be severely penalised (please refer to the General Study and Examination Regulations).
