At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to : | |
With reference to the Learning Outcomes Reference Text of the Degree in Translation and Interpretation, students following this Course Unit develop and acquire the following LOs: On completing this Unit students should be able to demonstrate their ability to: - identify the producer, the target audience and the function of a source text; - identify documentary and informational needs arising from a source text; - identify reliable and suitable sources for the documentation needed to (1) understand the source text and (2) that can be exploited for language purposes in order to produce a translation (target text); - resolve translation problems using printed or online lexicographical resources, search engines or other resources presented in class; - translate (written or sight translation), within a set timeframe, a new text on a theme seen during the course, with or without access to resources and produce a translation that is grammatically, lexically, syntactically and phraseologically correct and has appropriate punctuation; - draw up a price estimate and invoice for a piece of translation work; - provide, if necessary, explanatory notes with their work; - save their work and supply it in the form requested to the client by the agreed deadline. On completing this Unit students should be able to demonstrate their ability to translate from language C into language A and within the agreed timeframe a text on a familiar subject using correct grammar, lexical selection, syntax, phraseology and punctuation. |

Content
The aim of this course is to introduce the basic principles of sight translation and written translation of general texts from German into French (and, for German-speaking students, from French into German with the help of the MemoQ software) through targeted exercises.
Individual exercises (practical work, laboratories, tutorials, simulations, etc.), occasional group work and project-based learning are pproposed. These will be supplemented by individual monitoring and homework assignments.

Teaching methods
Theoretical introduction and practical ‘hands-on' work using labs, class-based ICT equipment or not, guided study/work and simulation with or without preparation.

Evaluation methods
To obtain credits for a UE, students must sit all parts of the examination relating to the UE.
Continuous formative assessment, compulsory attendance and active participation in the course
Final assessment in the form of an oral and written translation exam: Q1 - Written exam 30% - Q2 - Oral exam (40%) and written exam (60%) 70%.
For German-speaking students, the Q1 30% exam consists of a translation into German using the MemoQ software.
In Q2 70%, an assignment (40%) must be completed during the semester. The exam (60%) consists of an oral translation (40%) and a written translation (60%).
Second session: the arrangements are identical to those for the first session.
If you fail MHAL1231B, you are invited to consult the detailed marks on the MOODLE/TEAMS page of the course. A mark of 10/20 or above for any part of the course will automatically be carried over to the second session and may not be repeated, provided that all parts have been taken. If you are absent or fail to attend one of the parts, your mark will not be carried over.
At this stage, machine translation is prohibited, unless explicitly authorised as part of an exercise or assessment.
