At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

On completing the Course Unit Mastering Spoken Spanish students should be able to:
• Recognise and analyse native oral messages in language B (dialogues, documentaries) in their multiple forms of expression (registers, accents and geographic variation).
• Reformulate these messages in language B using analytical skills and correctly applying the rules of grammar and phonetics in context (moods, tenses, vocabulary, numbers) with correct intonation and rhythm, according to the Castilian norm (University standard).
• Maintain a general conversation in Spanish on a topic studied during the course.
 
Content
• Developing the ‘macro-skill' of "speaking".
•  Practising phonetics, including accent, intonation and rhythm.
• Developing the ‘macro-skill' of "understanding".
•Consolidation of basic language structures, using key basic everyday vocabulary (home life, city life, transports, etc.), and grammar skills needed to develop oral communication skills. By the end of the course students have a sound grasp of the main language functions as set out in the ‘European Reference Framework For Languages' (level A - Speaking & Comprehension).
• Topics covered: communication for everyday situations.

Teaching methods
* Pair work or work in small groups based on interactive (question & answer, dialogues, debates, role play, conversations, interviews, games, etc.) or non-interactive tasks (presentations, monologues).
* Integrated listening comprehension and oral expression exercises following a range of specific formats (question & answer, oral summarising, reconstitutions, variations) through exploiting spoken language material (audio-visual materials).
*Various readings
* Interactive teaching that encourages self-correction.
* Homework required: readings, exercises, writing short texts, listening exercices, etc.

The type of activity may vary depending the group's level (beginners, intermediate or advanced).
Evaluation methods
Assessment methods :
To obtain credit for a UE, the student must sit all parts of the examination relating to the UE (whether they relate to learning activities - AA - or parts of courses).
MHES1121 A (Q1) : January - June - August
Group 1: Certifying assessment at the end of the term, with oral assessment taking place during the last week of the course or during the exam period.
Group 2: Certification assessment at the end of the term, with oral assessment during the last week of the course or during the exam period.
For both groups, 20% of the final January grade is awarded to students in proportion to to their attendance and active participation (including assignments) in class. This does not apply to second or third exam periods.
MHES1121 B (Q2): June - August
Group 1: Certifying assessment during the term (oral presentations) and integrated certifying assessment at the end of the term.
In June, the final assessment is based on a presentation (20% of the grade) and an oral lab examination (80% of the grade). In accordance with article 72 of the General Regulations for Studies and Examinations, the lecturer may propose to the jury that a student who fails to submit the presentation within the required time limit be refused registration for the examination.
In August, the final assessment is based on an oral lab examination (100% of the grade).

Group 2: Certifying assessment at the end of the term and oral assessment during the last week of the course or during the exam period.
20% of the final June grade is awarded to students in proprotion to their to their attendance and active participation in class (including assignments) . This does not apply to second or third exam periods.

The type of assessment may vary according to the level of the groups formed (1a-1b-2a-2b).

The final grade is the weighted average of grades A (Q1) and B (Q2). In the final grade, part A (Q1) is worth 30% and part B (Q2) 70%.
The format of the assessment may vary depending on the level of the groups involved (beginner, intermediary, advanced).
Q1 is worth 30% and Q2 is worth 70%.

*  Students wishing to be excused from the course (some Spanish-speaking students) but still wish to sit the exam must contact the teacher and obtain an exemption.
