Main themes
This course offers an introduction to the first phase of English literary history (from ca 650 to ca 1850). It summarizes the most important genres, writers, and developments, and places them in their literary and historical context. As part of this course, students are also expected to read a selection of texts and excerpts from across this period. A series of workshops will be organised to help students read and understand these texts.

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to : | |
1 | Students should be able to identify the typical features of the most important literary genres and trends and to place them in their sociocultural context. They are expected to know the key figures and works from this period of literary history, and they should have read the relevant excerpts and be able to recognise, analyse, contextualise, and compare them. |
