Prerequisites
Students have successfully completed a course in basic English grammar (LENG1123 or equivalent).  
Main themes
The course unit introduces students to English syntax and stylistics. 
  1. Syntax: grammatical categories; syntactic and semantic functions; phrases; simple, compound and complex sentences 
  2. Stylistics: analysis of the lexical and syntactic characteristics of different varieties of English (e.g. spoken English; academic writing; language of newspapers) 
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 Master the terminology of English syntax and stylistics 
 
2 Identify, explain and illustrate concepts and phenomena related to English syntax and stylistics
 
3 Analyse a sentence syntactically and associate it with a tree representation
 
4 Carry out a stylistic analysis of a short text
