Main themes
This course introduces students to a number of modern-day research issues in a variety of fields, illustrating the fundamental issues at stake in the history of Western Europe and its global interactions between the 15th and 18th centuries. In particular, the dual movement of colonial empire-building and state-building must be followed. It also looks at the political and military consequences of the religious reforms of early modernity. Finally, the course looks at the era of revolutions that marked the end of the early modern period.
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

4 Learning outcomes specific to the teaching unit :
  • Master the chronology of early modern history and its main frameworks.
  • Master the development of historical knowledge by examining a number of sources and works.
  • Be able to draw on a "portfolio of readings" to identify some major research issues.
 
Content
This course is intended to be complementary to LFIAL1155, Introduction to History. In particular, it will focus on topics such as the first globalization from the European perspective (exchanges and conquests); religious reforms, confessionalization, religious and political armed conflicts; and the 17th and 18th centuries’ revolutions. Special attention will be paid to clarifying the links between the historical context and artistic manifestations .
