This course focuses on learning to read and write and their prerequisites.
The course addresses the current scientific knowledge on the cognitive processes involved in reading and writing development, to help the continuity planning of teaching sequences.
The course will cover the following topics: prerequisites (oral language, phonological awareness, sounds discrimination, etc.), written words identification, reading comprehension, lexical and grammatical spelling and text production.

The course will cover the following topics: prerequisites (oral language, phonological awareness, sounds discrimination, etc.), written words identification, reading comprehension, lexical and grammatical spelling and text production.
Teaching methods
The course is based on theoretical lectures, reading of scientific papers, analysis of teaching activities, discussion on children cases studies. It will alternate collective and individual work.
Evaluation methods
Formative and certificative evaluation on the basis of an individual work on one concept of the course (theoretical research, and well-argued planning of teaching sequences). The individual work is counting for 20 points/20.
The use of artificial intelligence tools (such as ChatGPT or Claude, or tools integrated into a search function or office suite such as Bard, BingAI or Copilot) is prohibited in the context of the production and writing of individual work. Any use of an AI tool will be considered an irregularity under Section 7, articles 107 et seq. of the Règlement général des études et des examens (RGEE), with all the consequences that this entails, as set out in articles 111 et seq. of the RGEE.
