The course presents the different ways in which literature interacts with the visual arts (painting, sculpture, engraving, photography, etc.), paying attention to the historical and cultural contexts of artworks, from the Middle Ages to the 21st century.
The course focuses not only on illustrations in literary works but also, more broadly, on the various ways in which texts and images interact in the literary field. Key concepts such as representation, mimesis, imitation, realism (or the effect of reality), illustration, ekphrasis, etc. are defined.
The course is organised around the analysis of numerous examples.

Content
This year's course will focus primarily on the relationship between the visual arts and French and francophone literature from the 19th to the 21st century. In particular, it will take into account the technological and media developments that have contributed to change the nature of the relationship between the visual arts and literature.
It will include a brief historical overview on the major concepts that have marked the evolution of this relationship up to the 19th century.
