Prerequisites
To take this course, students must have reached the level A1.2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. This should be attested by:
  • the ILV placement test organised during the 1st week of each semester
    OR
  • a recent DELF A1.2 (less than 1 year)

Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 Listen
  • understand oral announcements and instructions
  • understand the main points of a conversation with native speakers (personal and family information, shopping, their local environment, work, study)
  • understand radio programs and recordings.
 
2 Read
  • understand simple texts on topic subjects (ordinary or work-related language)
  • read instructions: user guides
  • read directions:  leaflets, menus, announcements, timetables, the yellow pages, signs and billboards
  • read to be informed and discuss: letters, brochures and short newspaper articles describing facts
  • understand correspondence: short and simple personal letters, standard letters on familiar subjects
 
3 Write
  • describe a present or past personal experience, write about their family and friends, life, work or studies
  • compose a short biography, write a simple personal letter to invite, thank or apologise to someone, or to write a note or message

Content
According to the preestablished course description, the teacher summarizes the content.

In this course, students  are  put in daily life situations where it is necessary to listen, read, speak and write.
 
In each course, they  listen to everyday matters documents, they  interact  in  familiar conversations, they discover the life in Louvain-la-Neuve and in Belgium through sightseeing, films and songs.
Teaching methods
This course is based on an action-oriented approach, engaging the student in diverse tasks to acquire a better knowledge of the language, while stimulating the development of receptive (listening and reading) and interactive skills.
The sessions take place in person, but some of them can be done online or outside the classroom for added educational value.
Different materials are used by the student during the session: syllabus, grammar book, websites.
Evaluation methods
Certification is based on a continuous evaluation and on a performance in the examination session.
  • Absence (justified or not) from the examination or any part thereof will result in a final mark of absence (justified or not).
  • Continuous assessment tasks may not be submitted (for the first time) after the deadline set by the teacher, except in the case of a medical certificate.
During the semester, continuous assessment (30%):
  • 2 dialogues performed in front of the class (10%)
  • 1 written expression test (10 %)
  • Classroom engagement and on line quizzes achievement (10%)
The final exam grade is made up of 5 parts (70%):  
  •     a test organized in week 10 or 11, focusing on language proficiency (10%)  
  •     a final exam in week 13 or during the January, June or August session, covering the 4 skills:
  •         reading (15%)
  •         listening (15%)
  •         writing (15%)
  •         speaking (15%)
In the event of failure (mark below 50%) in at least 1 of the 5 parts of the exam, the mark for the weakest part is applied to the entire exam:
  • In the event of failure in the language skills section (mark below 50%): the student has the option of retaking the test only once, before the final exam day, after receiving formative feedback following the first sitting.
  • In the event of failure in one or more skills on the final exam (mark below 50%): students taking the final exam in August have the option of retaking the failed skill(s) OR the entire test, if they wish to improve their mark. Students must explicitly inform their teacher of their choice no later than the first day of the session.
No continuous assessment tasks may be presented during the August session.
Absence (justified or not) from the exam (or any part of it) results in a final mark of absence.
Other information
Opened to the students enrolled at UCLouvain as well as to the members of staff.
Participants must have an A1 level.
This course is situated on level A2 of the Common European Frame of Reference for Languages.
