Content
Theoretical Notions:
  • Introduction to archival sources (definition, places of preservation, research tools),
  • Scholarly editing of a text,
  • Concepts of historical chronology and geography,
  • Scientific apparatus and bibliographic references,
  • Formulating a research question and structuring a scientific work,
  • Appropriation of narrative sources and/or archives as historical sources,
  • Study of the press as a historical source.
Application of theory through exercises in class and five individual assignments with increasing difficulty:
  1. Research and analysis of archival documents (Assignment 1),
  2. Analysis and edition of a short historical text within its context (Assignment 2),
  3. Approach to an ancient or early modern document/theme (Assignment 3),
  4. Synthesis of a contemporary historical issue based on press analysis (Assignments 4 and 5).
Teaching methods
Lectures; exercise sessions in the classroom or library; personal assignments (with individual feedback provided by the course assistants).
Evaluation methods
January session: partial and indicative continuous assessment based on work submitted in Q1 (T1 and T2) and an oral test presented outside the session (all worth 25% of the final mark at the end of Q2).
June session: continuous assessment based on the work submitted in Q1 (T1, 2) and Q2 (T3 and T4) (worth 5%, 10%, 25% and 50% of the final mark respectively) and the oral test presented out of session in Q1 (10% of the final mark). Failure to submit certain pieces of work will result in absence from part of the test, even if the overall average is above 10/20.
September session: submission of an amended version of the final written assignment (assignment 4) counting towards the full final mark for the September session (100%). Exception: if certain interim papers were not submitted in June, they must be submitted for the September session and will be taken into account in the assessment for that session (in addition to the amended version of the final written paper).
Generative artificial intelligence (AI) must be used responsibly and in accordance with the practices of academic and scientific integrity.
