Emphasis will be on a critical use of various sources in efforts to reconstruct the geography of ancient times. Students will be shown how to use a cartographic software program, following which they will search libraries and archives for cartographic documentation.
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

Sensitivization to various sources and methods of historical geography : written sources and toponymy, earth sciences, archeology, aerial photography, iconographical sources and ancient cartographic documents.

Content
The main aim of this course is to raise awareness of historical geography (in its broadest sense) in a number of ways:
By showing the dynamics that have brought history and geography into dialogue, and the different conceptions that have emerged from this dialogue.
By confronting sources, methods and tools that are particularly valuable for historical geography.
By encouraging personal reflection on what historical geography can contribute to the work of historians, and putting these reflections into practice.
Teaching methods
The course will combine lectures and comparisons with various sources and works.
Evaluation methods
Students will be assessed on the basis of a written assignment (18/20) and on their presence and participation during the sessions (2/20).
In the event of failure in June, students will be required to produce a new paper for the September session.
Generative artificial intelligence (AI) must be used responsibly and in accordance with the practices of academic and scientific integrity. As scientific integrity requires that sources be cited, the use of AI must always be reported. The use of artificial intelligence for tasks where it is explicitly prohibited will be considered as cheating, namely for the writing of the assignment.
Online resources
Powerpoint projections of the course sessions, as well as various documents, will be available via the Moodle platform on the course website.
