Content
This course aims at developing the following skills
- simultaneous processing of visual and auditory information;
- cross-linguistic and cross-modal transfer (from written to oral).
The emphasis in the course is on 1) the speed and quality of understanding (nonsense, false meanings and counter-meanings; extraction of relevant information; argumentative moves); 2) the fluency of rendering (pauses, false starts and restarts) and the quality of the target language (syntactic correction, calques, interferences, pragmatic adequacy, lexical variety).
Teaching methods
Sight translation from Russian into French of texts or speeches of increasing length and difficulty on subjects relating to Russian society, current affairs and culture. Analysis of comprehension and transfer problems that are encountered.
To improve the speed and quality of comprehension, students are invited to compile a portfolio of articles in the source language (on social issues, current affairs and Russian culture), and to submit an article every fortnight, identifying and analysing the comprehension and transfer difficulties that arise.
Evaluation methods
January and August/September sessions: oral exam: sight translation from Russian into French of a general text (current affairs and/or social issues) of 600 to 700 words.
