For each theme: preparatory homework, use, practical application, and consolidation of lexical and grammatical knowledge through:
- Receptive activities: written and audiovisual documents accompanied by comprehension exercises (e.g., gap-filling, paraphrasing).
- Oral production activities (role plays, debates, conversations) and written production (email writing, comments, etc.).
- Presentation of a group project related to the field of communication (Video Project) or a summary of participation in the Tandem Project (see below).
Evaluation methods
Students will be evaluated on their acquisition of knowledge and skills throughout the year to ensure gradual progress.
Specifically, the assessment will consist of the following components:
First Semester (30% of the total for the year)
If the student provides a medical certificate for the oral and/or written exam, they will receive an M as the final grade.
Specific provisions for PEPS students, as relayed by the PEPS’in Cell, will be applied.
Students with entrepreneur or athlete status must provide, at the beginning of the academic year, to the course coordinator and teacher, a detailed list of dates (with justifications) on which they will not be able to attend classes, also to ensure their presence on assessment days. Compensatory tasks may be considered if the course coordinator and teacher have been informed.
Attendance is mandatory. If the teacher deems it necessary, they may propose to the jury to oppose the student's registration for the course exam if the student has not regularly attended learning activities (RGEE - art. 72).
Generative artificial intelligences (AI) must be used responsibly and in accordance with academic and scientific integrity practices. Scientific integrity involves citing sources, so the use of AI must always be disclosed. The use of artificial intelligences for tasks where they are explicitly prohibited will be considered as cheating.
Specifically, the assessment will consist of the following components:
First Semester (30% of the total for the year)
- 4 points will be awarded through ongoing assessment during class sessions, which will include one or more vocabulary tests and various productive tasks.
- Vocabulary knowledge will be assessed in various ways, including gap-filling exercises with translations (at the end of sentences or grouped) or the production of sentences that demonstrate the student's mastery of both vocabulary and grammar.
- 4 points will be awarded through active participation in the Tandem Project (with KU Leuven students) or the Cultural Project (see the “Other Info” section below).
- If the student does not participate in one of the projects in the first semester (or abandons it), they will receive an A for this component of the assessment and will not be allowed to take the December partial exam. If the student participates in the project professionally in the second semester, a 0 will be awarded for the first semester project component, but the student will be allowed to take the written and oral exams.
- 12 points will be awarded based on a 90-minute partial exam organized in week 14. This exam will include vocabulary questions (via the methods explained above), a "classic" reading comprehension exercise (e.g., true or false, multiple-choice, comprehension questions), and a brief summary/opinion based on an audiovisual source.
- In case of non-participation (excluding legitimate reasons or attendance issues), an A will be awarded as the final grade for the first semester results.
- 3 points will be awarded through ongoing assessment, which will include one or more tests and several productive tasks.
- 5 points will be awarded through active participation in the Tandem Project or the Cultural Project.
- If the student does not participate in one of the projects, an A will be awarded as the final grade for the course at the end of the June session.
- 6 points will be awarded based on a 90-minute written exam organized in week 13. Students will be evaluated on their mastery of vocabulary (40%) and through a written expression (60%) based on several videos.
- In case of non-participation in the written exam, an A will be awarded as the final grade for the course at the end of the June session.
- 6 points will be awarded based on an oral exam during the May-June exam session. This will involve a discussion with the teacher based on an article read during the 15 minutes preceding the interview. The goal will be to respond to certain elements of the text, discuss one or more themes covered in class, and answer cultural questions about the Dutch-speaking world.
- In case of non-participation in the oral exam, an A will be awarded as the final grade for the course at the end of the June session.
- 3 points will be awarded for the elements of ongoing assessment from the first and second semesters, provided they are favorable to the student. The previously earned points will be recalculated to compose a grade out of 3 points.
- 5 points will be awarded for participation in the Tandem Project or the Cultural Project. If this component was previously passed (by adding the grades from the first and second semesters for the chosen project), the grade will be retained, and the student will not need to redo it. However, in the case of failure or non-participation in one of the projects, the student will need to complete a new individual video project on a Flemish or Dutch cultural or historical element, according to the modalities described above and detailed on Moodle. Additionally, these students will need to orally present their project separately from the oral exam.
- In case of non-participation in this cultural project, an A will be awarded as the final grade for the course at the end of the June session.
- 6 points will be awarded based on mandatory participation in a written exam covering vocabulary and themes from the first and second semesters. This exam will include vocabulary questions and a written expression based on videos.
- In case of non-participation in the written exam, an A will be awarded as the final grade for the course at the end of the June session.
- 6 points will be awarded based on mandatory participation in an oral exam. This will involve a discussion with the teacher based on an article read during the 15 minutes preceding the interview.
