The course is devoted to an in-depth analysis of several works from the French Middle Ages (12th-14th centuries) based on a theme chosen each year
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 At the end of the formation, students :
  • will be able to practise a critical text analysis;
  • will have gained an in-depth knowledge of poetical and rhetorical devices of literary texts;
  • will be able to comprehend the continuities and disruptions within the use of these devices from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance.
 
Content
The course begins with an overview of the historical and literary context from the twelfth to the fourteenth centuries.
Secondly, once the historical and literary background has been acquired, students will focus in greater detail on a genre or theme that lends itself to a critical and philological approach based on a corpus of texts from the 12th to 14th centuries.
Students are invited to read a selection of texts based on the genre or theme studied, as well as a corpus of critical readings on the subject in question. 
 
Other information
 
The course is particularly recommended for students doing a dissertation in the field of medieval literature.

Lectures with a variety of teaching materials : reading extracts from works ; PowerPoint presentations

Students preparing a master thesis in the field of medieval French and Renaissance literature are strongly encouraged  to follow the course.
