This course sets out to help students develop advanced skills and expertise in international and European affairs-related translation from various perspectives (diplomacy, geopolitics, geostrategy, etc.) and to teach them the specifics of the specialism, including how to adapt their translation to the type of text, the client's profile and the purpose intended.
The course will attempt to simulate the execution conditions of a real translation project. Students will have to tackle the various steps of a German-to-French translation project with professionalism, from order to delivery (i.e. administrative tasks, documentary and terminological research, translation and revision). Students will be asked to translate one or several texts dealing with international politics and geostrategy, to meet specific deadlines and to rely on CAT tools when appropriate, according to what will be specified on the Moodle page of the course or to the instructions given during the course.

Teaching methods

In-class sessions in computer lab.

Evaluation methods

Continuous formative assessment during the term.
Evaluation during the January session (written examination).
In case of a failure or an absence at the January examination, the exam will have to be taken during the August/September session (written examination).
The assessment may require, authorise or prohibit the use of machine translation and artificial intelligence depending on the exercise to be undertaken. In all cases, the use of machine translation and artificial intelligence will be subject to the conditions specified in the assessment instructions.

Other information

Use of computer-assisted translation tools:
As one of the aims of the course is to develop students' translation skills and their ability to appreciate the quality of a machine translation, the course may include exercises that require, authorise or prohibit the use of such tools.
Preparation and continuous learning:
Students are expected to read the world press (both French- and German-speaking) as well as specialised magazines in order to stay up to date with the political, diplomatic and geostrategic state of affairs during the course period and in anticipation of the evaluation.
