The course pursues two objectives:
1) to initiate the students to different issues that lie at the intersection between “law, ethics and politics”;
2) to immerse the students in the Dutch language, the teaching language of this course.

Content
The course begins with a discussion of some basic theories of morality, ethics and the rule of law, and subsequently focuses on a series of case studies (varying each year) to show where and how political and ethical considerations come into play in law, and how to solve the resulting issues.
Teaching methods
The course is in the form of lectures (accompagnied by a reader and slides, that provide the course outline).
Evaluation methods
Type of assessment
The assessment consists of a written exam (or possibly an oral exam in case of force majeure), based on two open-ended(essay) questions, semi open/closed book (i.e. only case-law reader allowed (the rules for annotations follow those applicable to the ‘codes BAC’). Students may also bring legislative and regulatory sources, provided that any annotations comply with the same rules as those applicable to the reader).
Language of assessment
The exam questions are drafted in Dutch. The answers may be in Dutch or French, according to the student's choice. There is a bonus of 2 point in total if both questions are answered in Dutch (1 bonus point per question).
Assessment criteria
The assessment is intended to evaluate the understanding of key concepts, the ability to conduct legal analysis, and the capacity to develop a critical, reflective and structured line of reasoning.
Additional information
