Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

On completing this unit, students should be able to:
• understand and explain the English language studied during the course;
• translate the vocabulary learned using appropriate equivalents in French;
• talk about the aspects studied in the Q2 lectures on “culture” using the relevant vocabulary.
This unit is also an opportunity for students to develop their oral proficiency. The unit's target level is the European Reference framework B2 level for languages (minimum level required to pass the Unit). Students learn to give a presentation and deepen their understanding of - and ability to use - the cultural features of the English language (usage, polite forms, register, etc.).
 
Content
Term 1 (30H): Language
The first part of the module Language and Culture focuses on Language, working on thematic vocabulary (lexicology) and oral skills.
Term 2 (30H): Culture
The second part of the module Language and Culture focuses on Culture, consisting of a series of lectures (15H) on the history of institutions and contemporary social issues, and practical and applied exercises to consolidate the students’ understanding (15H).
Teaching methods
Term 1 Language:
Variety of exercises organised by theme to consolidate the vocabulary chapters studied in class and to support students as they study the chapters independently.
Variety of formative exercises.
Term 2 Culture:
Weekly lectures on the historical development of institutions and current social issues, primarily in the UK but also elsewhere in the English-speaking world.
Variety of formative oral exercises to prepare students for the oral evaluation. The oral communication tasks are designed to (a) help students to use context-relevant communication strategies, to (b) develop students’ awareness of grammatical and phonetic accuracy, to (c) develop students’ awareness of the different language registers, and to (d) develop students’ fluency and self-confidence. 
Evaluation methods
To obtain the credits related to a module (UE), the students must present all the parts of the evaluation relating to the module. Term 1 and Term 2 are each worth 50% of the June total.
Term 1 (50%): Language
Written exam on the vocabulary learned during the quarter.  
Term 2 (50%): Culture
Oral exam on the content of the course and portfolio (30%) and written assignment/portfolio (20%)

Term2 (50%): Oral exam on the content of the course and portfolio (30%) and written assignment/portfolio (20%)
NB: The use of generative AI is prohibited in the Language and Culture sections. Documentation and writing must be done without AI assistants. Machine translation tools may only be used to understand bibliographical sources in specific cases. The use of any technology will be done responsibly and in accordance with the practices of academic and scientific integrity, and will therefore be systematically indicated by the student (see University Regulations)
