Translation C to A


By following this course students learn to discern the function/purpose of an authentic English language text and to resolve any comprehension difficulties by applying the reading strategies studied in Year 1 (BAC1). Students' translations are corrected with particular emphasis paid to coherence and cohesion as well as to the importance of writing in a natural style, avoiding calque; in other words, maintaining an appropriate distance with the English ST.
Teaching methods
- Translation exercises with systematic formative correction in order to offer students useful comments and explanations with respect to the difficulties they encounter during their translations.
Exercises (practical or applied exercises, laboratory work, tutorials, simulation, etc.)
- During the second term, sight-translation exercises represent 50% ot the assignments.
Evaluation methods
a)Translation from C to A
Assessment of optional texts translated during the year, no marks are given but comments are provided to help students improve (using the same assessment criteria as for the final exam).
A final exam requiring students to translate a complete text of around 350 words in 2h, with access to standard definitions-based monolingual English and French dictionaries and other linguistic tools (grammars, synonyms, …) but without access to bilingual dictionaries or machine-translation devices; assessment (correction) criteria in line with the learning objectives set out above.
Students who have not participated in the exercise sessions on a regular basis can be denied access to the final examination, as provided in the Règlement général des études et des examens.
Examination copies with more than 5 spelling, grammar and /or syntax mistakes will be given a ‘fail' mark.

b) sight translation from C to A
Students are requested to attend the class and to hand in 3 papers during the term; the weight of the combined marks is 25% of the total mark for Sem. 2. No examination is organized at the end of the term (June). Students who fail in June are required to take the sight-translation exam (a text on a general topic, around 400 words long) organized in August/September.
