Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

At the end of the year, the students should know the morphology of the language, be able to write a short text, express themselves in simple everyday life situations and present a piece of work prepared beforehand.

As studies of French and Romance Language and Literature are centred on the linguistic and literary areas, the course is designed from the outset to raise the students’ awareness of Spanish literature as well as its cultural and linguistic diversity.

At the end of the course students will have reached the A1-A2 level defined by the Common European Framework of Reference.

Content
This course focuses on basic training in Spanish through practical language learning and aims to provide in-depth knowledge of grammar, vocabulary and syntax, which are essential for developing communicative language skills in both reception (understanding simple written and spoken texts in standard language) and production (oral and written expression in monologue and interaction in everyday communication situations).

This language learning is achieved by addressing topics related to the communicative needs of Spanish speakers at levels A1-A2, as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR): introducing oneself and others (personal information, character, physical description, daily life, leisure activities and interests, family and friends, etc.) and simple interactions in everyday communication situations (shopping, social interactions in public spaces, requesting information, etc.). As language and literature studies are structured around the mastery of languages, their literatures, history, and cultures, the course introduces these themes through literary and cultural texts and discourses, fostering students’ awareness of the history as well as the linguistic, literary and cultural diversity of the Spanish-speaking world.

In addition to teaching the Spanish language, the course aims to teach linguistic terminology and gradually introduces a reflective analysis of language use in authentic communication contexts, in order to familiarise students with the linguistic approach to language.
Teaching methods
This teaching unit is delivered in person and includes lectures that introduce key linguistic themes and content, followed by practical sessions focusing on communicative language skills (both production and reception) as well as grammatical, lexical and syntactic content. The in-person classes require active participation from students and must be supplemented by daily independent study.

The course materials used during the sessions (PowerPoint presentations, vocabulary lists, exercises, practical work syllabus, etc.) are made available to students on Moodle. In addition, other materials (additional exercises and useful resources) can also be downloaded from this platform.
Evaluation methods
At the end of each term, a final mark is given whose repartition is:
1st term:
  • 30%: Ongoing evaluation: exercises and vocabulary/grammar tests (see calendar on Moodle)
  • 70%: Final written examination assessing all the skills and content from the first-term course
2nd term:
  • 30%: Ongoing evaluation: exercises and vocabulary/grammar tests (see calendar on Moodle)
  • 70%: Final written and oral examination assessing all the skills and content from the second-term course
Final mark of the UE: 1st term 40% and 2nd term 60%.

During the second session, assessment is based on a written and an oral examination covering all the course content.

In accordance with Article 72 of the General Regulations for Studies and Examinations (RGEE), the teachers may propose to the jury that a student who has not completed the required stages of the educational programme be denied registration for the examination. In case of absence from an assessment, students must provide a medical certificate to the teachers within 48 hours of the assessment. In this case, the assessment will not be postponed or included in the final assessment. If a medical certificate is not provided, the students will be given a mark of 0 for the assessment in question.

Furthermore, for any task that is subject to assessment, any use of generative AI, other than those explicitly authorised in the course instructions, is prohibited and will be considered cheating, under the terms of the RGEE. In case of suspected cheating, the teachers may summon the students concerned. The students must be able to demonstrate oral mastery of the content developed in their work. In this case, failure in either the written or oral assessment results in failure of the entire examination.
Other information
Any modification (content, evaluation, schedule, etc.) will be communicated by Moodle.
